Lists with This Book. The rhythm is the star of this fantastic novel. For fans of prose that can shake its lexical bootay like a master groover, this is the next book you read. La forma en los personajes y las clases sociales se unen es uno de los grandes aciertos, aunque estos presenten poco desarrollo en el transcurso de la novela. El recurso de la guaracha, que repite estribillos, comienza siendo divertido pero hacia el final pierde novedad.

I looked and I do not know if guaracja was really a hit song for Macho, although he did appear in some low-budget movies. The wealthy family is basically a caricature: His wife is into spending it. When he is not playing nasty tricks on prostitutes, their son is in love with his Ferrari.
The mistress is just trying to get by and get money for her developmentally delayed kid. The book has become kind of a classic in Caribbean literature. It kept my attention despite dragging in places. Probably really a 4 star read, but the extra star is for the translation, which is simply breathtaking. For fans of word-play and riffing – similar to Elkin and Forest et al – and very much worth spending time with.

Como novela, resulta casi buena. Vale la pena leerla, pero terminarla es un alivio. A snapshot of San Juan, Puerto Rico in the mid s that covers barely more than the few minutes it takes for a hit song to be played on the radio. The guaracha – ‘Life is a Phenomenal Thing’ – punctuates the narrative that captures, in turn, the thoughts of a senator and his son stuck, separately, in a traffic jamhis wife at her therapist’s office, and his mistress camach for him in her apartment.
They are all trapped in one way or another, the men outside, the women inside. I was drawn to A snapshot of San Juan, Puerto Rico in the mid s that covers barely more than the few minutes it takes for a hit guaaracha to be played on the radio.
I was drawn to this book after reading the description by Raphael Dalleo in Caribbean Literature and the Public Sphere: From the Plantation to the Postcolonial which draws attention to the way the expected literary language of the novel is almost completely eclipsed by a vernacular imbued with commercialised popular culture radio, music, television, film. In the face of such ‘Americanization’, the author seems to be saying, prospects for a robust independent Puerto Rican identity are not good.
In translation, however, these pleasures must largely be imagined rather than experienced. Gregory Rabassa does a heroic job but his task is I think an impossible one here. I can’t say I liked this book because the truth is I won’t ever re-read it if I have a choice. It was a relief to finish it. Guracha can’t even say I understood all of it, it’s that hard to follow.
I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 only because I acknowledge the critique about the media and puertorican attitudes it developes is amazingly relevant; it is rich in popular culture references as well.

I read this book in Spanish at the time of its publishing. It shocked me to the core, but I only because I could not believe no one had written it before. A creative musical writing style, african, spanish and taino mixed in one–very puertorrican. An excellent translation of an almost untranslatable book. The words leap out of the page and seduce you, much like the whore from the first page, whom the reader camahco “a look, a cautious look, or the shadow of a look I wish I could read this, it’s too abstract, too sing-song.
